ABC Travelling Fellows 2008 Diary

Tenth stop: Dallas 22 May to 24 May

Thursday 22 May

After a short flight, we were again gathering bags, and meeting Dr Bucholz (ABC 1985), our local host. After a short drive we were at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, set up by Masons to treat children with orthopaedic problems. We were to be sharing rooms (there’s a bed for everyone!), and dropped bags before heading off to see Dealy Plaza, where JFK was shot (and to consider the different positions that the shots might have come from), before visiting the museum in the Book Repository building. Full of local knowledge, we headed back to the hospital to find the gym, to deal with the expanding waistlines incurred by our hospitality to date, before heading to Dr Bucholz’s home to undo all the good work with some excellent steak. Dinner was enjoyed with faculty members, and plans made for the next day.

Lunch

The fellows at lunch with Dr Bucholz

Friday 23rd May

A pickup at 0700 for the TSRH rounds, discussing some complex paediatric cases, particularly scoliosis, DDH and limb length problems, before separating for a clinic/research morning: (Dominique) Meek, Pollock, Poon and Sutherland to Parkland hospital OR (percutaneous pelvic fixation, complex knee replacement for Charcot joint, shoulder hemiarthroplasty), Williams to spine labs at TSRH and a case discussion with Dr Johnson, Barrow to Dr Ezaki’s OR (hand scar contracture release), and Mulhall to OR with Dr Sacato (hip preservation case).

Working on talks

It's never too late to work on your talks

After an excellent lunch in the faculty dining room at Parkland, the fellows gathered for a scientific session with faculty and residents. The fellows, including Dr Molehill, gave talks, as did Dr Starr (percutaneous fixation of acetabular fractures) and Dr Ezaki on Maintenance of Accreditation. Discussion on all talks was lively and informed. After a quick bag drop, we turned round and headed to an excellent Japanese restaurant for dinner with Dr Bucholz, Dr Ezaki and faculty. It was a rather full-bellied group that headed on to the hotspots of Dallas, but a good time was had by all. And so we depart Dallas.
