ABC Travelling Fellows 2008 Diary
Thirteenth stop: Memphis Saturday 31 May to 3 June
Saturday 31st May
After a slightly fraught trip, the Fellows arrived in Memphis, slightly surprised to get all luggage arriving at the same time, to be met by Jim Beaty (ABC 1991, AAOS president 2007-8). The Peabody Hotel is clearly the “Gun” hotel in Memphis, and was superbly comfortable. After a relaxing afternoon of admin, comms and exercise, we travelled to a social afternoon at the home of Dr Daboy, for a residents’ social affair. Full of marguerites, the Fellows were dropped back at the hotel, and headed direct to the famous Rendezvous Restaurant for outstanding ribs. Now full to the brim, it was out to Beale Street for Blues and Booze well into the night.

A very mellow day off saw the group separate to see sights such as Graceland, Beale Street, the Gibson guitar factory, the Rock and Soul museum and Sun Studios, as well as getting kit sorted and doing some calorie offsetting. At 6pm the group were picked up by
Dr Beaty and Dr Canale, for a very relaxed dinner, followed by sundowners on the hotel roof and an early night.

A gentle start to the day saw the Fellows picked up by Dr Beaty and transferred to the Campbell Foundation, to see where the famous textbook is produced, and to learn about the formation and running of the Campbell Clinic.

From there we were taken by Ben Guevara and Patrick Toy (residents) on a tour of the new In-Motion research facility and the Med Trauma Centre. The database run in the trauma team was of particular interest, automatically producing powerpoint presentations from the data entered by the residents, and really making the trauma case meetings very efficient. After lunch back at the hotel, it was over to the Campbell Clinic in Germanstown for a tour of the fabulous facilities of the Bone Palace, before the evening scientific session. Once more the Fellows stood, drilled down into the data, got buy in from stakeholders and presented their work to a large audience of Faculty and residents. Dr Beaty gave introductions to each with highlights (or where they lowlights?) from individual ABC applications, before Andrew Barron rounded off the session with an oration to the ABC Fellowship and the individual Fellows. Thanks to Dr Frank Camillo for taking the team photos.

Apparently the red carpet is for the Peabody ducks not the ABC fellows
After the presentations, all adjourned to the lobby of the clinic for beer and food, and a more relaxed opportunity to chat and unwind, before the Fellows’ transport arrived to remove all to the hotel. After a rapid turnaround, it was back into the night to sample one more time the delights of the Flying Saucer and Beale Street.

The morning after was relaxed, as departure for the airport, and more queues, was set for 1030. And so off to the final stop on the tour, with home and hearth beckoning in the near distance. Thanks to Memphis, and particularly Dr Beaty, for the warm welcome and understanding shown to a group of tired travellers.
