ABC Travelling Fellows 2008 Diary

Eleventh stop: St Louis 24 May to 28 May

Saturday 24th May

After the heat of Texas, arriving in the relative cool of St Louis was a blessed relief for the Northern Hemisphere fellows. Dr Bill Ricci (ABC 2007) ( “I do trauma but not hand and wrist; I’m not interested in any bone that you could swallow “) and Dr Larry Lenke (ABC 1999) met the group and bundled us into the biggest van of the trip so far. An easy ride later we were checking into the Chase hotel, sharing suites rather than rooms and all very comfortable. After a quiet afternoon of exercise, personal admin and establishing communications, we gathered for dinner in the hotel restaurant with Dr Ricci and Dr Robert Barrack (ABC 1993), following which a release of energy from the whole group led to a very merry bunch heading for bed

Sunday 25th May

The group was moving rather slowly on Sunday morning, when Bill Ricci appeared to take us for some sightseeing. First stop was the St Louis Arch, a superb piece of engineering and art, symbolising the opening of the American West and remembering President Jefferson. The ride to the top was very cramped, but the views made it worthwhile. From there, via lunch, we moved to the Annheuser-Busch Brewery, home of Budweiser and other beers. The tour was curtailed by a soaking in a rainstorm, but we still managed to test the product before departing.

After a scenic drive, the Fellows had the afternoon to relax, before getting picked up to travel to Dr Lenke and wife Beth’s home for an excellent pool party, with superb food, swimming curtailed by a lightening storm. On the way a select group visited Dr Barrack’s excellent cellar and got away with a bottle of Opus One to test. Most excellent.

Rather than go to bed on return to the hotel, a group decision was taken to go to the movie theatre in the hotel, to watch the new Indiana Jones film, an excellent end to the day.

Monday 26th May, Memorial Day

The much appreciated day off had been planned to start with golf, but it was rained off, so after a long lie, the Fellows headed off to the Mall to seek out gifts for families, before an afternoon at leisure/exercise/sleep. In the evening, we visited the Rib Festival to test some excellent and indeed award winning ribs and listen to .38 Special playing live, and then early to bed. The end result was a rested and relaxed group, really ready for the following days.

Tuesday 27th May

Early start. Peter Poon and Alasdair Sutherland were picked up by Brian Mackey (resident) to travel to Chesterfield Orthopaedics, while the other Fellows were taken by Dr Ricci to Barnes Jewish Hospital. The morning scientific session was by teleconference between the two sites. All Fellows presented, and talks also given by Dr Clohisy (Management of hip disease in the young patient), Dr Yamaguchi (Healing of rotator cuff tears).

After the talks, the fellows separated to clinical sessions: Alasdair Sutherland to OR with Dr Wright and Dr Matava (shoulder and knee cases); Peter Poon to clinic with Dr Yamaguchi (shoulder cases); Dominic Meek to clinic with Dr Clohisy (hip cases); Rob Pollock to OR with Dr McDonald (scapular tumour excision); Kevin Mulhall to OR with Dr Barrack (arthroplasty); Richard Williams to H with Dr Lenke; Andrew Barrow to clinic with Dr Boyer (hand cases).

In the afternoon, the group convened at Chesterfield for lunch with Dr Ricci, followed by a tour of the impressive, new facility, and then a tour of the south campus, including research labs, out-patients and med school. With a total of 17 Nobel Laureates, Washington University is maintaining a long history of excellence in research. At the end of the afternoon, it was back to the hotel to prepare for travel to Busch Stadium to watch the St Louis Cardinals take on the Houston Astros at rounders, sorry, baseball. The result was a disappointing defeat for the Cardinals, but the cool weather sent several of the Fellows scurrying for the shop to pick up Cardinals clothing. An excellent evening, though, and then home to pack up and say farewell to St Louis. Many thanks to Bill Ricci particularly, for looking after us so well and securing the day off that did us all so much good.
