Public Information

Welcome to the website of the British Volume of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. With our American colleagues we are the official scientific outlet of the Orthopaedic Associations of most English-speaking countries. Orthopaedic surgery encompasses the surgical treatment of deformity, diseases and accidents of the limbs and spine, of the bones and joints and soft tissues such as tendons, ligaments, muscles, and nerves. There are links from this site to the British Orthopaedic Association and other Orthopaedic Societies, together with information about meetings and of specific search engines to obtain more detailed information. This site contains the abstracts of papers of the current Journal, as well as the Proceedings of meetings of Orthopaedic Societies worldwide. The papers are one of the main vehicles of communication between orthopaedic surgeons and contain highly specialized language. Selection for publication in the Journal itself is a rigorous process and only approximately 15% of submissions are successful. All are reviewed by at least two experts who do not know either the institution or the authors ('blind peer review'). Before publication most authors are subjected to rigorous analysis and only then, if the Editor is satisfied as to its scientific competence, originality and relevance, is the paper accepted for publication. The body of orthopaedic knowledge built up over successive years in the Journal and Proceedings is an important yardstick by which the orthopaedic community judges its clinical practice.
